My wife and would love to by a parcel of beautiful land - a farm - in southeastern Lee county, and we were considering looking into having one or two wind mills place on there because we believe in energy independence and the payment to us would help finance the property. But after reading and researching these justifiable issues such as sleeplessness, nausea, shadow flicker, turbine fires and tower collapses, etc. and just the effect of the general health to human and animal, we are quickly changing our minds! We are even considering not making an offer on this property we love so much because we are now worried that neighbors will set them up and it will ruin our "little slice of paradise". But we still need more evidence to convince us either way.

You are entirely ignorant of what will happen if you don't set those windturnines there. You see, if all of UK's windfarming projects would have been allowed then more then 15% of everyone's energy would have been green and pollution free. One main argument against wind farms is that it destroys view. Well I can tell you if you don't place them right now your view well be the one of a desert within 20-30 years. By 2015 all polution emission must go down drastically and green power generation must go up enormously. If you are still not convinced but are concerned (and not without reason) about Global Warming then support hydroturbines! Do goddamn something or I can hold you responsible for indirectly killing 10 african labourers every year. Oil is the engine of our world and we need to replace that engine right now. If we don't do this there won't be a next generation of humans. I know it sounds very dramatic but it is true. Global Warming is the biggest problem in the history of menkind and you, by writing this blog, are turning yourselfs away from this problem. Get some responsibility. I know you can, I hope you will.

P.s.
please forgive any spelling errors, english is not my native language.

Matthias Calis, The Netherlands

Very interesting. Ido be curious to know who the developer is, what their plans are etc. That's a pretty phenomenal piece of land.

power wind turbines

I think your video says it all - the noise is from the microphone! And notice in the video where they are located - in a rural area!!! Not next to someones house!

I'd like you to records the noise level from a coal burning power plant or a nuclear power plant. I'll bet the noise is very unpleasant, so say nothing of the view and the danger.

Go wind power! Here is an energy source that does not contribute to global warming. I live near these and see them almost every day. It serves as a reminder to always be 'green' and be aware of positive things we can do for the environment.

Dick,

Do you really believe that shadow flicker only happens for 5 minutes and what do you base that statement on? Have you ever experienced it first hand and the various situations under which it can occur? Please elaborate to better explain your position and why you believe it's nonsense.

There are about 200 non participating home owners in the footprint of the DeKalb County Industrial Wind Energy Center. The general feeling of the home owners is that no one wanted the wind turbines in the first place and certainly would not want them on their land. So, for clarification, please identify the home owners you are referring to.

What a bunch of nonsense. They got up at 6 am or whenever the 5 minutes of shadows cross their house and act like it's happening all the time.

Sour grapes that your land wasn't chosen. Get over it.

My safety, health, welfare, quality of life, and property value have been sold for 30 pieces of silver by the DeKalb County Planning and Zoning committee. No one should have the right to inflict so much harm on their fellow man as each member of this committee has voted to see done. How can those who have sworn to uphold the trust of the citizens of this county be so callous and uncaring as to invade and destroy everything that is safe and good about my home?

County Board & Property Owner Public Hearings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FPL Energy Illinois Wind, LLC on behalf of itself and the participating landowners, is proposing to build and operate a wind farm consisting of 133 turbines in portions of Milan, Afton, Clinton and Shabbona Townships in DeKalb County (as well as 18 additional turbines in Lee County). The 398-foot-tall towers would be placed on various private properties generally bounded beginning at the southeast corner of Gurler Rd. and County Line Rd., extending east to Anderland Rd., south to Minnegan Rd., east to Hwy. 23, south to Lee Rd., west to Shabbona Rd./Junes Rd., south on Shabbona Rd. /Junes Rd. to Shabbona Grove Rd., and west on Shabbona Grove Rd. to County Line Rd., in DeKalb County, Illinois, and legally described below. However, in order to build and operate the wind farm, the County Board must agree that a wind farm is substantially similar to other listed Special Uses in the A-1 District, which is the zoning of the subject properties, and grant a Special Use Permit to FPL. Before the County Board can approve a Special Use Permit, a public hearing must be held before the DeKalb County Hearing Officer.

FPL Energy Illinois Wind, LLC (a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC), located at 700 Universe Blvd., Juno Beach, FL, has filed a petition for such a Special Use Permit for properties in Milan, Afton, Clinton and Shabbona Townships in DeKalb County, IL. A public hearing will be held before the DeKalb County Hearing Officer on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. in the Sycamore High School Gymnasium, 1 Spartan Trail, Sycamore, IL. As this will be the only opportunity for public input on this matter, all interested parties are encouraged to attend and be heard. The Special Use petition, MI-09-01, is available for inspection at the DeKalb County Planning and Zoning Department, 110 E. Sycamore Street, Sycamore, IL, (815) 895-7188.

I am so sorry to hear of what you must tolerate, all in the name of "green" energy so that the rest of the country can pat themselves on the back and feel good about "clean" energy. We are in the midst of fighting the arrival of a wind farm that will bring with it over 120 massive turbines. I agree that Americans can do better, but unfortunately, the potential for making big money won't allow that to happen fast enough to prevent these awful structures from cluttering our landscape and ruining our rural quality of life. Thank you for sharing your story.
